Howling (2002)

Production

In Howling, Siberian legends are used to create a World Music-Theater piece about a woman who kills a wolf, only to be pursued by the pack and discover that she is, in fact, from the Wolf Clan. The music-based work is taken from ancient melodies that were recorded in Summer 2001 by members of Yara Arts Group in a trip to Mongolia.

The show was developed by director Virlana Tkacz, Buryat artists Sayan Zhambalov and Erzhena Zhambalov and Yara artist Watoku Ueno. Movement was by Katja Kolcio. Music was by Erzhena Zhambalov. Set and lights were by Watoku Ueno and video by Andrea Odezynska. The show  featured instrumentals and throat singing by Battuvshin, Sayan Zhambalov, Victor Zalsanov and Dondok Dasheyev. The cast included five performers from Buryatia, three of them being Honored Artists of the Republic, and five New York members of Yara Arts Group: Eunice Wong, Meredith Wright, Angela Lewis, Stephanie Summerville and Anais Alexandra Tekerian.
