Production
This performance art opera with lyrics by Richard Foreman and music by Phillip Johnston (of the Microscopic Septet), adapted Nathaniel Hawthorne's 1835 story of the same name about a young man who goes off one day into the woods to meet the devil. There, he has a startling vision of the world around him--his community, friends, family, and even his wife--and the vision haunts him for the rest of his life. It was scored into a jazzy, edgy yet melodious opera. The design of "Young Goodman Brown" was "not exactly contemporary" and quite stylized, being staged more in choreography than scenery.
