The Golem (1992)
This production of Moni Ovadia's "The Golem" was an American premiere. The sung drama shares the legend of the walking clay man, created by a medieval Rabbi to guard the ghetto, is one of the most enduring Jewish myths. This performance featured a score by Ovadia accompanied by a nine-piece Klezmer orchestra, and a cast of seven led by the composer as the Rabbi. Direction was by Ovadia and Daniele Abbado, who collaborated on the book. The show employed a polyglot of languages, centering on Yiddish.
