Nosferatu : A Symphony Of Darkness (1991)
Production
Originally produced by La MaMa E.T.C. in 1985, "Nosferatu--A Symphony of Darkness" was inspired by F.W. Murnau's 1922 film of the same name based on Bram Stoker's 19th Century novel. The production employed slides shot from the 1922 film, complete with subtitles, special lighting effects, multitrack sound, and modern dance. The reworked production of "Nosferatu" was presented as an examination of 1980's America: a "period piece, " in the words of its creator. By introducing the legendary monster into the vapid, materialistic lives of the 80's yuppie generation, Ping Chong seemed to liken contemporary chic to the plague of Bremen in 1838.
