Kwaidan: Three Japanese Ghost Stories (1998)
This production of Kwaidan reopened La MaMa's Annex Theatre, which was closed for the 1997-98 season for renovations. Ping Chong's first full-scale puppet show, though he had used puppetry in productions before, was presented in association with the Center for Puppetry Arts, Atlanta as part of the International Festival of Puppet Theatre presented by the Jim Henson Foundation. This adaptation of Lafcadio Hearn's collection of stories was conceived and directed by Ping Chong and used front and rear projections and small to giant puppets, as well as live performers. It featured puppetry by Jon Ludwig and art direction by Mitsuru Ishii. Following its La MaMa run, the production toured nationally under the auspices of the Henson Festival on Tour program.
