Turandot

Work

Turandot is a work of Italian commedia dell'arte thought to be inspired by a Persian story from Les Mille et un jours ("The Thousand and One Days") by François Pétis de la Croix. It follows the story of the man-hating Princess Turandot, who has consented to only marry the suitor who can answer her three impossible riddles. After many failed attempts, the latest suitor is the deposed Prince Calaf, who vows to both solve the riddles and melt the princess's icy heart. Like other works of commedia dell'arte, Turandot makes use of stock character types, distinguished by unique masks worn by the performers, as well as pantomine and physical comedy.
