Alma, The Ghost Of Spring Street
Work
This play was written by Ozzie Rodriguez in 1976. It is based on a set of historical events surrounding the murder Guilema Sands in 1799, and was the result of Rodriguez's wide-ranging research - which took him from the New-York Historical Society to the building on Spring Street which stood on the site where Sands died (in a well). The trial of the Sands' accused murderer, Levi Weeks, was the first murder trial in the US for which there is a formal record. For information on that trial, People v. Levi Weeks, see http://www.nycourts.gov/history/legal-history-new-york/legal-history-eras-02/history-new-york-legal-eras-people-weeks.html.
