Film: Multiple Rolls, Various Early 1970's Productions
Can contains 4 rolls of camera original footage from various productions-- including, "City of Lights," "Beauty and the Beast," something by Mabou Mines, "Dr. Ma Gico" "Sacred Guard."
- One roll shows excerpts of the 1973 La MaMa production of "Sacred Guard." The film is very dark, almost impossible to see any image without the light source below it. The footage begins with a male wearing a dark shirt and silver coat, a grey cap over his head. There are bright blue rings behind him, as well as pink and silver objects surrounding him - it is unclear what these are. Most of the film has limited lighting. Is joined by another performer in a similar outfit, and they are the focus of this excerpt.
- One roll is the original footage for "Beauty and the Beast" and "City Lights." Begins with a close up on a white male with large curly brown hair, and he's wearing a tshirt. The camera zooms out to a wide shot, but his surroundings are not lit. He is singing. Then there is a closeup on another singer in some kind of decorative headdress. One portion shows various closeups of a naked woman - strange cuts suggest this was edited. There is a dark scene with red lighting, and a man wearing a disco ball on his head. There is a fade, and then a scene with a performer in white toga holding part of a column. The film is pretty dark throughout, mkaing it difficult to determine the action. These descriptions are merely excerpts of the film.
- A roll labeled "Mabou Mines" depicts an unknown production by the avant-garde theatre ensemble known as Mabou Mines. This production uses a sparse wooden set, with two levels and a trap door. Several performers appear throughout, though it is difficult to determine who they are because most of the film was shot from afar. The edge code indicates that this film was produced in 1972, so this production is from that year or later. This film also has a shot of the set during a rehearsal, as well as a scene filmed on the street of a horse-drawn carriage.
- The last roll, called "Dr. Magico Original" shows the 1973 La MaMa production of "The Magic Show of Dr. Magico." This footage has gorgeous color, though some scenes have very low lighting and are hard to discern through inspection. The set has a black and white checkered floor, and the performers wear a variety of elaborate costumes, along with sparkly face paint.
