Video Work: Documentation of "Na Haaz Zan" (1972)

This video documents a production of “Na Haaz Zan” performed by the American Indian Theatre Ensemble at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club in 1972. The production, and the video, opens with a performance by the E-Yah-Pah-Hah Chanters. “Na Haaz Zan”, an adaptation of the Navajo creation myth, was conceived and designed by Robert Shorty, and featured translations by Geraldine Keams, choreography by David Montana, and music by Ed Wapp, Jr. This video was originally shot using a Portapak camera, and camera originals are spread across two separate half-inch open reels (numbered B44 and B45 in La MaMa’s collection).

Video documentation of a 1973 production of “Na Haaz Zan” on tour at Rough Rock Demonstration School in Chinle, Arizona, is contained on Reel C19 in La MaMa’s collection.
