Video Work: Documentation of "Street Sounds" (1970)

This video documents the 1970 La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club production of Ed Bullins’ "Street Sounds," directed by Hugh Gittens and performed by La MaMa’s resident GPA Nucleus Company. The play consists of a series of short scenes and features monologues, dancing, singing, romantic drama, and some nudity. The play’s final scene depicts a slave revolt in which the part of a female slaveholder is played by a black male actor in drag. This video was originally shot using a Portapak camera, and camera originals are spread across two separate half-inch open reels (numbered A3 and B3b in La MaMa's collection).
