George Harris III was born September 6, 1949 to George Harris II and Ann Harris. After spending the first 10 years of raising George and his siblings in Bronxville, NY, the Harris family moved to Clearwater Beach, Florida on the Gulf of Mexico, where George Harris II worked for the Air Force as a radio operator. In 1962, George Harris II moved back to New York where he met Ellen Stewart while looking for a place to live. Over a couple of years the rest of the Harris family joined him in the East Village and became involved with off off-broadway.
George Harris III moved to the Bay Area in the late sixties where he adopted the name Hibiscus and founded the Cockettes in Haight-Ashbury. In the early seventies a group of the Cockettes split off and formed the Angels of Light due to philosophical differences on whether to charge for performances (the Angels of Light insisted performing for free). Hibiscus met Angel Jack and moved back to New York, where the Angels of Light performed numerous works before touring Europe. Prior to passing away of AIDS-related complications on May 6, 1982, Hibiscus produced and performed in a plethora of shows in New York, including the musical revue "Sky High" (1979) and the rock outfit, "Hibiscus and the Screaming Violets."
