Asian American Repertory Theatre

Organization

La MaMa Chinatown
The Asian-American Repertory Theatre was formed by a group of New York City Asian American professional actors around early 1970, with Ching Yeh as the company’s director. Its first project, Three Travelers Watch a Sunrise by Wallace Stevens and directed by Yeh, was performed for two months in the basement of the Transfiguration Church in Chinatown. Ellen Stewart was invited to the play by Yeh, grew interested in helping the company, and invited them to rehearse and perform at La MaMa. The group eventually acquired a new name, La MaMa Chinatown, which is the name it is most well-known for.
