Video Work: Documentation of "Elegy for a Down Queen" (1972)

Description: This video documents the February 1972 Playhouse of the Ridiculous production of "Elegy for a Down Queen" at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club. The piece was written by a young Leslie Earl Lee (of the Negro Ensemble Company) and directed by John Vaccaro. A May 1970 “New York Magazine” article described the play as “a wildly imaginative… journey through the plantation Southland of Negro memory.” The video was originally shot using a Portapak camera, and camera originals are spread across two separate half-inch open reels (numbered B6 and B7 in La MaMa's collection).
