Draupadi (2002)
Production
Draupadi depicts a classical Sanskrit story of a princess who was married to five brothers, and of their constant wars. It was conceived and directed by Ellen Stewart, and premiered at La MaMa in 2002. The performing ensemble included members of the Great Jones Repertory and members of three other companies: SLANT Performance Group, the Philippine-American dance/martial arts troupe Kinding Sindaw, and Indhra Rajashekar Dance Academy. Headlining the show were several Kathakali artists from India: Shanmukhadas Chandrasekharan, Sreedharan Achari Revikumar, vocalist Kunjisankaran Sadhudas Vinod, and percussionist Parameswaran Hareesh. Traditional Kathakali eye flower makeup was done by Sukumaran Thendankavil.
