The Sadness of Others : A Situation Comedy
"The Sadness of Others was made in collaboration with the cast and the production team. Characters and scenes developed out of improvisations and the plot just sort of grew by itself. Additional contributors were Mike Iverson, Julie Atlas Muz, and Jami Schlagbaum, who did a series of workshops and a showing at The Ontological Downstairs [in the Summer of 1999]."
In the story, a minor administrative error drops five characters into our dimension: a financial analyst, a videotherapist, an actor, and Eastern European journalist, and a parrot. Unaware of their former existence except in their dreams, they live, love, fail, and succeed without ever really questioning their lives. Three years later, the PanDimensional Bureaucracy catches the mistake and an administrator from Dimension X is sent to lure them back before things go awry. Unable to materialize due to various dimensional regulations, he is forced to communicate with through waveforms: computer, radio, and TV.
Dances were made in collaboration with the cast and Patricia Hoffbauer.
