Mother (1994)
Production
After 22 years, the legendary avant-garde company Mabou Mines returned to La MaMa with the world premiere of "Mother" by Patricia Spears Jones. A multi-media work on the subject of a revolutionary mother, inspired by Gorky's revolutionary novel, the production was a grand interactive experience, with the audience sitting in small groups in fully-functioning "realistic" kitchens with televisions, microwaves and all the surroundings of consumer domesticity. (Some of the action was actually witnessed using Walkmans and small TVs.) Surrounded by flying revolutionaries, spies and dancing police, Maleczech takes a trip through motherhood. Funding for this production was provided by the NEA, the Greenwall Foundation, and the Harburg Foundation.
