X Train
Work
The play is built around a character created by James, whose dramatic situation was inspired Frank Perry's 1968 film, "The Swimmer" (starring Burt Lancaster). What ensues is a kind of road movie on stage, where the influx and expulsion of passengers enables the introduction of acquaintances and situations, both real and fantastic. When a little boy boards the car with his mother, he asks how the train will cross the river to Queens. Told the voyage is underwater, he imagines that the train has plunged into the East River, and sees sinking ships, a great white shark, and even a beautiful African-American mermaid outside the car's windows.
