Woyzeck

A play by Georg Buchner; :"Woyzeck deals with the dehumanising effects of doctors and the military on a young man's life. It is often seen as 'working class' tragedy, though it can also be viewed as having another dimension, portraying the 'perennial tragedy of human jealousy'. It is loosely based on the true story of Johann Christian Woyzeck, a wigmaker who later became a soldier. In 1821, Woyzeck, in a fit of jealousy, murdered Christiane Woost, a widow with whom he had been living. He was later publicly beheaded.";"Woyzeck was based upon the story of the true Franz Wozzeck who murdered his prostitute mistress and was hanged for the offense. Georg Buchner was much moved by the transcripts of the event, written by Dr. Clarus, and in anger wrote the play as an attack on what he perceived to be inhumanity of Clarus' conclusions. Dr. Clarus felt the much abused Franz Wozzeck was totally respondible for the murder whilst Buchner felt social conditioning and the basic human condition played a large part in driving Wozzeck to the terrible crime. The play remains to be totally understood as Georg Buchner's true intentions...he died in 1837, at the age of 23, with barely completed draft. It was not produced until the 20th century. In 1925, Alban Berg took the play for the libretto of his opera "Wozzeck" using the factual character name. The result was [one] of the most important operas written in the 20th century."
