A City Called Forest

Lovely Dark and Deep The Woods Are
"A 40's-style morality play. A once-upon-a-time fable intended to dramatize the correlation of the decay of urban culture with the decay of our forests. It's a play on how we create a world we can no longer live in.";"Lovely Dark and Deep The Woods Are is a performance illustrating the precarious balance of urban ecology by translating classical ideas of city life into the mythology of the wilderness, thus making urban decay a metaphor for the decay of the environment and the similarity between the two. The performance will maintain a story line involving the residents of this forest and their spiral towards destruction. In folklore the forest is represented as a place of mystery, a dark place with very little sunlight; the folklore of the big city is very much the same and hence the inspiration for this performance. The characters will personify woodland flora and fauna representing their tribal urban counterparts. The performance will take its style from forties film noir: shadows, indirect lighting, trenchcoats, fedoras, mink coats, platform shoes."
