Production
The Trojan Women: An Epic Opera
"The keystone [performance] of La MaMa's 35th Anniversary; the cast features two-thirds of its original acting company from the original production in 1974, together with a new generation of Great Jones Rep[ertory] artists. The original run was December 12 to 22; added performances will be December 26 - 28." The opening night performance ran in conjunction for La MaMa's 35th anniversary benefit gala.
"Re-creation of the piece began November 15, with workshops in which senior cast members instructed newer ones in the piece's words, rhythms, and music. That was preparation for restaging by Serban and Swados, to begin November 26. The company has grown to its largest size ever, and now includes eleven original cast members (of the original 15), 17 newer performers, some of them whom are from the New Great Jones Rep Company, six musicians (of whom two were in the original troupe) and eleven children. Ted Lambert, who was a child in the original production, returns as an adult.
The members of the original acting company are Natalie Gray, Neal Harris, Charles Hayward, Onni Johnson, Ted Lambert, Jane Lind, Valois Mickins, Joanna Peled, Priscilla Smith, Dolphi George, and M.A. Whiteside. Original musicians Paul Harris and Bill Ruyle are joined by Genji Ito, Michael Sirota, Yukio Tsuji, and David Varriale. Newer members of the acting company are Victor Attar, Charlotte Brathwaite, Daniel Raphael Katz, Kim Ima, Hunyup Lee, Julia Martin, Brian Nishi, Shawn Randall, Christopher Roberts, Danny Strauss, Shigeko Suga, Howard Thies, Kevin Wilson, Zishan Ugurlu, and Mia Yoo. Of the eleven children, nine are descendants of members of the Great Jones Rep and two are children of Andrei Serban.
This performance is dedicated to Lamar Alfred, Stuart Baker-Bergen, William Duff Griffin, Richard Jakiel, Leland Moss, and Sandra Muir.
"The Trojan Women" was last seen in New York in 1986 as part of La MaMa's 25th Anniversary celebration."
