500 Years: A Fax from Denise Stoklos to Christopher Columbus

Work

"500 Years: A Fax From Denise Stoklos to Christopher Columbus," is a feverish stream-of-consciousness monologue that begins in rage and slowly metamorphoses into an ecstatic assertion of freedom and love. A basic conceit of the work, which interweaves a freewheeling polemicism with historical vignettes, personal anecdotes and word games, is that Latin America's unhappy history since Christopher Columbus landed in the New World is a metaphorical shipwreck. To accentuate the nautical theme, the stage of La Mama, like the performer herself, is draped in fish net.
