When another theater group was unable to perform at Miss Stewart's La Mama theater, the redoubtable doyenne of the avant-garde got together with a few friends and created a ''dance-opera'' called ''Orfei.'' Performed on Thursday night at the La Mama Annex, 74A East Fourth Street, the piece is the product of La Mama's East First Street Music Workshop. ''Orfei'' is a pleasant, sometimes stirring way to spend an hour. It also offers a retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice that makes the legend live with a peculiarly lyrical intensity.
