Video Work: Documentation of "Carmilla" (1971)

Audio/Visual

This video documents the ETC Company’s 1971 production of "Carmilla” at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club. The play is Wilford Leach and John Braswell’s adaptation of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s 19th century Gothic vampire novella, and was part of the ETC Company’s first 5-Play Repertory. This Repertory also featured ”Demon,” “Gertrude,” “The Only Jealousy of Emer,” and “Renard.” The video was originally shot using a Portapak camera, and camera originals are spread across three separate half-inch open reels (numbered B3a, B3b, and B23 in La MaMa's collection).

Video documentation of later productions of “Carmilla” at La MaMa is contained on Reels B3, B4, and B59b (1972), Reels C6 and C7 (1973), and Reels F13 and F14 (1976) in La MaMa’s collection.
