Tim Schellenbaum


Tim Schellenbaum was the resident sound designer at La MaMa from 1994 until his death in 2019. He shared his skills as a composer, sound designer and musician with hundreds of artists who came through La MaMa's doors. Frequent collaborators included Ellen Stewart, The Great Jones Repertory Company, Richard Foreman, John Jesurun, Ping Chong + Co., Maria Irene Fornés, Ntozake Shange, the Talking Band, Theodora Skipitares, John Kelly and many more. He attended the University of New Mexico and became known for his experimental work on WKNM radio, as well as his creation and promotion of Punk rock. He performed with his bands Zozobra, Me Wee Beastie, and EIEIO. Tim also worked at numerous other downtown institutions such as The Kitchen, the New Federal Theatre, Theater for the New City, and P.S. 122. He was the recipient of 1998 and 2000 Obie Awards, as well as a 2007 Indie Theater Award for collaborative design.
